Please
don’t abandon your pet!!
Although more animals are abandoned in the summer, this unfortunate
practice goes on all year round in Greece.
If you are considering abandoning your pet, please think again. There are options
- options to look at so you can go on vacation and options to look into is
you want to rehome your pet.
| 01 | If you are going away or on vacation for a few weeks, you can book a place in a kennel. There are a number of good kennels in Attika alone that board both cats and dogs. Owners of kennels will be pleased to have you visit the kennels beforehand. Note that kennels will only accept animals that have up-to-date vaccinations. |
| 02 | If you have a cat and are leaving, you can hire a cat sitter. The sitter should get to know your cats before you leave and in your absence visit at least once a day, although twice is better. Leave information on when and what to feed, where supplies are, telephone number of your vet and friend who can help in case of an emergency and anything else you can think of. If money is a problem you could exchange pet sitting with a friend who has pets. |
| 03 | Take your pet with you. This may seem alike an odd suggestion but some hotels and resorts in Greece do accept small domestic animals; and this is even truer in other European cities. More and more people are travelling with their pets and the tourist industry is offering more and more services to people with pets. |
| 04 | Find a friend who is staying in the city and knows and likes your pet and board it with them. Or perhaps the pet could stay with relatives in the country? Or if you live in the country, offer a friend in the city the use of your home in exchange for looking after the animals. |
| 05 | Phone your local animal welfare society for information on pet sitters and kennels. |
| 06 | If you have rejected all the above and are determined to get rid of your pet, try to find it a home. You can place ads in local papers, phone local animal welfare societies, etc. Be patient, take your time and do your best to find the right home for this animal........surely it deserves this. |
| 07 | One more thing, if you do choose to abandon your pet on some lonely dock or some isolated mountain top or some busy city street, be aware that you are condemning this animal to a long, slow, painful death. If you can live with that, well.....there is nothing more that can be said. |
